There are many lagoons in Mexico, but non so beautiful as Yal
Ku. We are biased though, as Yal Ku is in our back yard at Luna
Azul, Akumal. It is out of the way of the normal visitor traffic
flow, which makes it even more special. It is full of beautiful
fish: Damsel, Stoplight Parrot, thousands of juvenile fish and
many species of brightly colored tropical fish. At the mouth you
can see Sea Turtles and Sting Rays who come to the entrance of
the lagoon to feed.
Yal Ku is located at the north end of Playa Akumal and open
from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. each day. It is well cared for and
guarded. Restroom facilities, outdoor showers and pathways
leading to wonderful spots for jumping into the clear, fresh
turquoise water. The entrance price is $5.00 per adult and $2.50
per child for the day. It is well worth the price as it is so
beautiful and tranquil. Lagoon passes can also be purchased at
the entrance.
Yal Ku is a mixture of fresh and salt water, which makes it
cool and refreshing.
The gorgeous green islands in the lagoon are wonderful for
birdwatching: Ibis, Blue Heron, Pelicans and other interesting
birds.
In Akumal, stop by the Ecological Center to learn more about
Yal Ku. The CEA is located next to the Akumal Dive Shop in the
main square.
